Charity:Water
Posted in Spirituality and such... on November 3, 2008 by burkelyMany of us in the US take having clean drinking water for granted.
However, 1 in 6 people on the planet do not have access to safe, clean drinking water.
That’s 1.1 billion people.
Charitywater.org is a non-profit organization that uses 100% of all donations to provide clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations.
Nathan Taylor Evans

Nathan is about 3 1/2 months old now. He is named Nathan in honor of Nate Saint, a Christian missionary to Ecuador, who was martyred in 1956 while spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a savage group of natives called Aucas.
Nathan is not at all what I expected from a newborn…he rarely cries or complains and is so alert and happy, particularly first thing in the morning.
He has already gone through tons of clothes that friends gave to us.
Nathan’s Aunt Holly made this quilt for him. Every member of the family drew something on a square and she put it together.
Thanks Aunt Holly!
Twiddling Thumbs
Posted in Meanwhile back at the ranch... on June 23, 2008 by burkelyWe are now just over 3 weeks from our due date. People ask if we are ready. The logistics are all in place and the waiting period is here, but it seems that Jennifer always finds something else to keep her busy. I joke about sitting in the rocking chair in the baby room twiddling my thumbs, waiting for him to arrive. I’m not normally a very patient person, but I know in this case, that he will arrive at exactly the right time.
What will he look like? What color will his eyes and hair(if any) be? What changes are in store for us?
I have so many questions and so many things I want to share with him! He will have so many decisions and choices to make in his lifetime. We know that he will make some good ones along with some not so good ones, but that is how you learn and mature.
“So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors.
Deuteronomy 11:18-21
Things I have pondered lately…
Posted in Spirituality and such... on February 15, 2008 by burkelyTwo things that keep popping in my head these days…
1) Boast only in the Lord, not in myself. In fact, I read today at lunch on the Desiring God blog:
“My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad” (Psalm 34:2).
It’s so easy to pat yourself on the back, but that does not bring glory to God. Boast in Him alone.
2) We need not worry about judging people or making sure that people receive their punishment for every little thing that they do that we don’t agree with. People are innately sinful – expect them to fall short of the mark – encourage them to strive for excellence.
“Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you;
he rises to show you compassion.
For the LORD is a God of justice.
Blessed are all who wait for him!” (Isaiah 30:18 )
